Senior Girls
The Lady Mohawks, who don't have a deep bench, were even more short-handed Monday night as they traveled to Brookland without the services of both Penny McCluskey and Allison Gurley. Currently Gurley is still rehabilitating an injury, while McCluskey fell victim to the flu bug and didn't make the trip.
But, despite a lack of depth, the Tribe hung with the Lady Bearcats before falling by a final of 42-49. Leading the way was Heather Scott, the only Mohawk in double figures.
The two teams played even in the first quarter, with Brookland leading by one going into the second frame. The home squad extended the lead to eight by the halftime intermission, and took a 22-14 lead into the locker room.
In the third quarter the Tribe rebounded, and by the start of the fourth quarter they trailed the Brookland girls by just five points--30-35. But the Bearcats went on to win the fourth quarter, as they outscored the Tribe 14-12 in the final frame to notch the win.
Scott led the Mohawks with 14 points on the game, while Mallory Wright finished with 8 and Sheleen Johnson and Breanna Wright had 6 points each in the loss. Nicole Baggett had 14 to pace the Lady Bearcats on the night, while Samantha Flowers finished with 13.
Junior Girls
The junior girls dropped their contest at Brookland Monday night by a final of 19-32. And although a half-dozen Lady Mohawks scored on the contest, no one had more than five points on the game.
A slow start once again put the Mohawks in an early hole, as they could only manage one field goal in the first quarter. In the second frame they improved that somewhat, pulling to a 9-15 score by the halftime break.
But Brookland held the junior girls to just three points in the third quarter, and seven more in the fourth, as they went on to take the conference win.
Pacing the Mohawk attack was Kacey Crossfield and Breanna Chandler with 5 points each, Jess Scheffler had 3 and Melinda Blackmon, Erica Vancill and Peyton Murphy had 2 points each in the loss. Jordan Maynard paced the Brookland effort with 15 of their 32 points.
Seventh grade
The Lady Mohawk seventh grade team just missed winning their fifth game of the year, but fell to 4-3 as they dropped a 19-20 decision at Brookland.
"We had the ball and a one point lead with just seconds to play," Lady Mohawk head coach Alan Rabjohn noted. "But they went down and made a layup to get the win."
The seventh grade squad has proved to be the most proficient of the Lady Mohawk teams this year, as the squads settle in under the tutelage of new coach Rabjohn. The team has a winning record, and is expected to make a good showing at next Saturday's seventh grade tournament at Rector.
The junior and senior Lady Mohawks were scheduled to be in action Tuesday afternoon, as they were to host Corning in the first two of four games at PHS. They'll visit Tuckerman Thursday evening and will return to the friendly confines of Piggott High next Monday, Jan. 18 as they host the Rivercrest Colts.
