Mohawks at Pre-Holiday Tournament
The Mohawks drew 4A Westside, and their star center Hunter Mickelson, in the first round of the Pre-Holiday Tournament at Brookland and dropped a 32-64 decision to the Warriors. This put the Tribe into the consolation bracket, and a meeting with conference foe Harrisburg Friday night. The Hornets, just a week out of the football playoffs, are an athletic squad but were still feeling the gridiron rust.
As the contest got underway the Mohawks ran out to an early lead, and were up 21-17 by the end of the first quarter. The Hornets cut the lead to just a single point by the halftime break, and the Tribe took a 39-38 lead into the locker room at intermission.
As the second half began the Hornets went on a 10-2 run, but the Mohawks responded and regained the lead 53-51 going into the final frame. The two teams were tied several times in the fourth quarter, and the contest came down to a 63-63 tie after senior guard Trent Edwards nailed two crucial free-throws.
The turning point of the game came with about five seconds to play in regulation, as Coomer battled for a loose ball and the Mohawks retained possession. On the inbounds play Coomer's number was called and he answered with a short running jumpshot as time expired, lifting the Tribe to the victory.
Zac Redmon paced the Mohawks on the game with 13 points, while Coomer finished with 12. Also scoring were Jon Perkins with 9, Edwards finished with 8, Alek Samples had 7, Connor Rodery and Hayden McMillon had 6 each and Tanner Murray finished with 4. Chad Lacy paced the Harrisburg attack with 27 points in the loss. As a team the Tribe shot an excellent 10 of 16 from the free-throw line, while the Hornets converted on 13 of 19 attempts from the charity stripe.
Mohawks at Hoxie
Monday night the Piggott Mohawks visited the Hoxie Mustangs and came up on the short side of a 55-67 conference game. Alek Samples led the Tribe in scoring on the night with 13, while Coy Yasler had 23 in the win for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs, who now stand at 5-2 overall and 4-1 in conference, and the Tribe played even in the first quarter with Hoxie leading 17-16 after one. The home team stretched their lead to 34-23 by the half, and cruised to the conference win by 12 points.
Tuesday night the Tribe was scheduled to host Brookland for this year's basketball homecoming game. Friday night the Mohawks will host the Earle Bulldogs in conference play, and will then be off for the Christmas holiday.
