Donna Vester of Corning was named Miss Clay County for 1969; local girls among the alternates were Rhonda Wiley, Jill Litzelfelner and Melinda Hampton. Meanwhile, the grand champion Angus heifer and bull were from Haley Angus Farm and Dick Haley and daughter Diana were pictured; while the Hereford grand champs were from the Aubrey Vangilder Ranch and he was pictured with his twin grandsons Keith and Calvin Evans.
The Mohawks blasted Pocahontas 61-8 at Schoonover Field, with three touchdowns from Rick Rodery, another by Jimmy Johnson set-up by a long Gary Mann run; two on passes from David Williams to Gary Wiley and another on a 47 yard fumble recovery and run by Dennis Bellers. Up next the Tribe will host Gosnell.
At the Carolyn Theater this week the features included Walt Disney's "Rascal" and "Hang Your Hat on the Wind" along with "The Big Gundown."
Three local soldiers have completed advanced infantry training at Ft. Polk in Louisiana; they included Pvt. Allan W. Branson and Pvt. Thomas L. Smart of Piggott and Pvt. Lindell L. Tanner of Rector.
A brief noted that James and Ann Blair had recently moved to Beebe, as James has taken a job in Little Rock. The couple (parents of this reporter) had been active in both Masons and the Order of the Eastern Star.
New cars are out, with Hardcastle Chevrolet offering several models including the 1970 Chevelle SS 396; meanwhile Irby Ford advertised their new models, including the Mustang Mach I.

Piggott students will take part in a new campaign presented by the National Child Safety Council, and pictured with Police Chief Leonard Bell were fourth graders Timmy Muse, Deanna Conley and Gina Blume. Meanwhile, the quorum court discussed a request by Delta Asphalt to locate an asphalt plant adjacent to the county shed on the west edge of Piggott.
Tom Johnson of Piggott has been promoted to the cutting room foreman at the local Gossard Company plant, and Mark Evans, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.O. Evans of Greenway, spent the summer performing at Dogpatch U.S.A. Mark is a junior this year at Harding University at Searcy.
At the Carolyn Theater this week the feature is "The Main Event" while the late show was "Pretty Wet Lips."
The Grand Champion Brangus at the annual Clay County Fair was shown by Vancil Farms this year, while the Grand Champion Hereford was shown by J. A. Waldron.
In sports, the Mohawks fell to Greene County Tech by a final of 16-36, and will host the Rector Blackcats this coming Friday night for the annual "Dad's Night." Meanwhile, the Lady Mohawk volleyball team swept Walnut Ridge in the past week and will host Paragould next. The junior starters were Kim Parton, Sherri Watson, Kim Garner, Laurie Davis, Kim Stewart and Shawna Tate. Senior high starters were Celia Clemons, Beth Clemons, Sherri Mobley, Cyndy Reagan, M'Linda Rongey and Liz Janes.

Extension Agent Jim Clements reports that farm yields should be slightly above normal this year, with cotton the only crop showing a decline. The 5,000 acres of corn in the county are doing excellent, and record yields are being reported. Also in the news, former local residents Jerry Cashion and Mrs. Billy (Betty Jo) Cashion of Wardell, Mo. were killed when their vehicle was struck by a train Sept. 15.
A dedication service for the new Piggott Masonic Lodge has been scheduled for Sept. 28; meanwhile some 50 folks showed up for the annual Crockett reunion Sept. 9, and the yearly Johnson reunion will be held Sept. 29 in Pollard.
Local EMT's were honored during Emergency Services Week as proclaimed by Gov. Clinton. Pictured were Jeff Winchester, Ola Fraysher, Vicki Alstadt, Buck Roberts, Sue Johnson and Tammy Swink along with ambulance supervisor Judy Wells and director of nursing Peggy Parrish.

In sports, the Mohawks fell to Gosnell 0-35 and will take on the Clay County Central Cougars for the first time Friday night at Rector. Meanwhile, the junior boys also dropped their game to the Pirates 6-31 and will visit Westside. The volleyball teams are both 2-1 on the season, with wins over Walnut Ridge and Paragould and a loss to CRA.
And the team of Scot Sale, C.W. Knauts and Terry Crawford of Kennett combined for a 26-under-par 118 to win the three man scramble at SCCC.
1989
The quorum court approved an increase in landfill fees at their meeting, and the jail bond ordinance, as Judge Harry Niewald presided over the monthly gathering. Meanwhile, Howard Winberry and Jim Gearhart will be in a runoff for the Piggott School Board seat.
It also was announced the Piggott Community Hospital was the recipient of a $50,000 grant, and this week's paper included a feature on Eulale Lingle and Edna Morrow. The sisters, who were also neighbors, both taught school for many years with Mrs. Lingle spending 41 years in the classroom and Mrs. Morrow a total of 35.
Also in the news, the Chamber of Commerce and PCH Auxiliary have scheduled a craft fair for Nov. 3 in the Piggott Armory; a vehicle stolen in Malden was recovered in the past week in the Piggott Cemetery and the Northeast Arkansas Rod and Gun Club is building a 24x24 addition onto their clubhouse.
In births to announce, a daughter was born to Coy Leslie and Angie Mauldin of Piggott Sept. 2 at Doctor's Hospital in Poplar Bluff. The new arrival has been named Casey Erin Mauldin.
In sports, both the junior and senior football Mohawks fell to Pocahontas in the past week, the seniors by a final of 6-21 and the juniors 12-28. Meanwhile, the Lady Mohawks split with Trumann with the senior girls dropping their set and the junior girls remained undefeated in taking theirs. Both will travel to Westside for a tough conference match in the coming week.
