The 2009 edition of the Clay County Fair will include a variety of attractions, including an antique tractor pull, lawnmower racing, a "Hot" tractor pull, team roping and a demolition derby.

Those events will be in addition to the usual pageants, talent contest and the canine contest. All the activities, with the exception of the talent show, are being held at the Clay County Fairgrounds on the north edge of Piggott. That event will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at the Piggott Community Center.

The antique tractor pull will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, in the fairgrounds arena. That day's offerings also will include the various pageants, beginning at 10 a.m. with the Baby Miss Clay County pageant. More details on all the day's pageants may be found elsewhere in this newspaper.

Entry of exhibits and set-up of educational booths will be going on from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, and from 3 to 8 p.m. poultry, rabbits and waterfowl will be checked-in.

Judging of exhibits will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, and at 6 p.m. the annual Clay County Fair parade will wind through the streets of Piggott.

The lawnmower races, which will include six classes of USLMRA sanctioned racing, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Admission to the races is $5 for adults and kids six years and older, with kids five and under admitted free. Those wanting more information on the lawnmower races may contact Glenn Bridger at 870-897-6234. The fair kitchen and concession stand also will be open following the parade.

More judging will be conducted Wednesday, and from 1 to 8 p.m. fair staff will be checking in livestock and horses. At 7 p.m. there will be team roping competition in the rodeo arena, and there is no charge for admission.

Thursday, Sept. 17, will feature judging of livestock and horses and it was noted that, contrary to what was listed in the fair catalog, all the livestock will be judged Thursday and not Friday.

The "Hot" tractor pull will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, in the fairgrounds arena with the Bootheel Tractor Pullers Association competing in both the Hot Farm and Super Farm classes. Admission to the pull is $5 for adults and kids six and older, with children five and under admitted free. Those wanting more information may contact Doug Deckerd at 870-926-2592.

The final day of the fair will feature several events. Beginning at 10 a.m. there will be an antique tractor display and the annual canine contest presented by the Clay County Humane Society. Also on the schedule is demolition derby action, with the pee wee derby set for 6:30 p.m. and the regular derby to follow at 7. There is no entry fee for the pee wee event, and trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers.

Entry fee for the derby is $30 for a car and driver in advance and it will be $40 at the event. Pit passes are $10 each for additional crew members. Admission for spectators is $5 for adults and kids six and older, with children five and under admitted free. Drivers will be competing for a first prize of $1,000, with $300 for second place and $100 for third. The top three entries also will receive trophies.

Those wanting more information on the demolition derby may contact Danny Seal at 870-634-8047.

The fair kitchen will be open daily throughout the fair and the concession stand will be in operation Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. It was also noted the exhibit buildings and barns will close at 9 p.m. each evening. Those wanting more information on other fair activities may be obtained by calling Marty Conley at 870-598-4369 or Irene Causey at 870-544-2307. Copies of the fair catalog are also available at the Clay County Cooperative Extension Service offices in Piggott and Corning and a number of local businesses, including the office of The Piggott Times.
