Self has taught for 33 years at PHS, and he also taught at Pocahontas for four years. Self said that his inspiration to become a teacher came from "a science teacher I had in high school." Self also said that he liked mathematics more than science, but, "I wanted to be just like him." According to Self, the greatest thing about teaching is, "Being able to change a few students. I saw a few [students] change from rascals to ladies and gentlemen." Self's favorite memory from teaching is, "Having students come back and tell me they've used my songs to sing [in their college classes]."
Many students have expressed their thoughts on Self's decision to retire. Elizabeth di Paola, a senior, said, "I think it's sad, and I feel sorry for all of the little kids that don't get to have him as a teacher, even though I think Mr. (Mike) Book (who has been chosen to take Self's position) will do a good job." Another senior, Amber Malone, said, "If I wasn't graduating, it would be different because he is a good teacher. He keeps the atmosphere alive." Heather Neeley, a junior, said, "I think that Piggott is about to lose one of the best algebra teachers it has ever had. The younger generations have no idea what they are missing." Taylor Armour, another junior, said, "His intellect will be missed because he is one of the smartest teachers here." James Hedrick, a senior, said, "He is actually one of the only teachers where I enjoy coming to his class. It's entertainment and knowledge at the same time." Senior Josh Small said, "As the last student to have taken all of the courses Mr. Self offers, I feel both privileged and sad. He has not only been a great teacher, but also a mentor to me. I have always looked up to him and respected him. Having taken all of his math courses, I have learned not only a great deal of mathematics, but some great songs, unforgettable quotes, and some life lessons. My favorite thing about Mr. Self would probably have to be when he randomly breaks out in a church hymnal. That always seemed to brighten my day."
The teachers and administration at PHS have also expressed their thoughts on Self's decision. Mrs. Regina Crittenden, the 12th grade English teacher, said, "One of the pillars of high school is leaving. I will really miss him. Mr. Self and I have taught together for many years. We have been friends for many years. He and I have a mutual admiration society. Most of all, he has done the job the taxpayers have paid [for] him to do." Ms. Phyllis Morgan, the high school counselor, said, "I am really sad to see him go, but very proud for him. I am just glad that all three of my children had the opportunity to have him as their teacher, because he is an excellent teacher. He will be greatly missed." Another math teacher, Mrs. Faith Conley said, "He will be greatly missed. Piggott is losing a great asset to our school and our math program. I personally will miss all of the support and encouragement he has given me over the years."
"Mr. Self was sort of an icon at this school," assistant principal Brock Swann said. PHS principal Barry DeHart said, "His enthusiasm, his innovations, and his genuine concern for the students at Piggott High School are exemplary. Under his leadership the math department has benefited. Mr. Self demonstrates the highest level of professional commitment and competency in his work with students and colleagues. Mr. Self will never be replaced, and we wish him health and happiness as he prepares for the new and exciting experiences that lie ahead."
Concerning his retirement, Self said, "I can work when I want to and not when I don't want to." His plans for after he retires include, "Woodworking and to continue preaching." Self also joked, "I'm going to make toys, grow my gut a little bigger, and buy a red suit." Mr. Self's unique teaching methods, as well as his personality will definitely be missed around PHS. When the school year is over, we will have to say goodbye, but for now let's sing, "We love this algebra, it never makes me cry. It lifts me up so high. I seem to touch the sky."
