1969

A feature on the new East-West Industries factory was in this week's paper written by Times Editor Danny Seal. Elsewhere in the edition Seal announced that he would be leaving the job to take a position with the Texarkana Gazette. In other news, Todd Fry, age seven, was in satisfactory condition in Memphis after apparently sticking his head into a large fan at the skating rink over the past weekend.

Mother's Day was observed at the First Baptist Church, with the youngest and oldest Mom's recognized. Youngest went to Glenda Holcomb, 23, while the eldest mother on hand was Lena James, age 87. And winners at the Greenway High School talent show were--Danny Dixon, The Cherry Blossoms and Kathy Jones of Rector.

Winner of the Sugar Creek Country Club held a Lady's Day Invitational golf tournament was Polly Smith of Malden with a 46. Meanwhile, the men's bowling league held an awards banquet and presented the award for high three game series to Claude Jones for a 589, followed by Troy Cox with a 583 and Eugene Mann with a 576. High game honors went to Clyde Lamp with a 232.

At the Carolyn Theater this week--"The Fastest Guitar Alive", "Hell in the Pacific" and "Around the World in 80 Days."

And Carryville phone customers were reminded that beginning May 16 they would need to dial 49, plus the number, to reach party line customers. (plus you had to hang-up and wait until you think they answered)

1979

PHS released their top ten students for the class of 1979, including--Paul Holifield, Jennifer Henderson, Susan Wallis, Donnie Morrison, Marty Conley, Debbie Haywood, Marquette Tinsley, Chris Camp, Galya Broadway and Tonny Crowson Russell. Meanwhile, PHS grad Robbie Camp graduated from the U of A law school. It was also reported that this year's PHS yearbook has been dedicated to Miss Leigh Cole.

William N. Holifield reports that 119 units of blood were donated at the recent blood drive in Piggott, the sixth one held since the practice began in 1977. And from the want ads; strawberries were ready for you to pick at .25 a quart..bring your own containers and see James K. Ingram.

At the Carolyn Theater the feature was "The Groove Tube" while the late show was an R rated version of "Alice in Wonderland."

In sports, Scot Sale of Piggott and Dwayne Crawford of Kennett won the Super Championship in the Sugar Creek Country Club four ball tournament with a 137. Meanwhile, at the annual sports awards banquet senior high athletes recognized included--Beth Clemons, Shelby Renfro, Susan Wallis, Renea Landrum, Mike Dickerson, David Argo, Todd Watson, Kevin Morris and Jimmy Mann. For the cheerleading squad awards went to senior high members Claire Roeder and Jewell Eason.

And it was announced that former Mohawk Donnie Morrison would be playing in the annual high school All-Star football game in War Memorial Stadium Aug. 4.

1984

The top ten students for the PHS class of '84 were--Mark Self, Angela Howell, Jeron Smart, Carol Hughes, Christy Kinder, Amy Wheeler, Randy Hinkle, Karen Cook, Lorre Gossett and Lynn Miller.

In other news, at a recent Chamber of Commerce meeting Brown Shoe plant manager Bill Barker said the future of the local factory looks bright..despite their change to making just components. "We'll be here for a long time, barring any unforeseen catastrophes," he noted. Employment at the factory had fallen from 350 to around 100 since the switch. Also during the meeting Don Roeder updated the library building project, and reported that bids would be open May 8..and members were reminded that an Arts and Craft Fair would be held May 16.

This week also featured a story on the retirement of Tressie Batey-Byrd of Pollard, who had been teaching in the Twin Rivers district at Qulin for 23 years. Prior to that, during World War II, she taught two years in Clay County at the Bunker Hill School south of Pollard and the Wildwood School west of McDougal.

At the Carolyn Theater this week "Police Academy" was held over, while the late show was "Blondes Have More Fun," which of course "ran for weeks in Memphis to record crowds."

In sports, C.W. Knauts and Terry Wilson of Caruthersville won the two man scramble at Sugar Creek Country Club with an 18-under-par 126...just beating Scot Sale of Piggott and Terry Crawford of Kennett.

1989

A tragic car-train accident in Greenway, 20 years ago last week, claimed the life of Lovina Jean Redman, 24, and her young son Christopher Troy. Meanwhile, strong words were exchanged as the quorum court decided to pursue a tax issue to pay for the construction of a new jail. Also pictured was the Logan County Jail, of which the current facility was loosely modeled. Also in the news, the new Piggott wastewater treatment plant is now up and running.

A team from Piggott Elementary recently took second in the state in the "Spring Stock Market" game sponsored by the Arkansas Gazette. Team members were--Laura McKenney, Bradley Dunlap, Stevie Finder, Reggie Crossfield, Terri Cato and Autumn Dees. Meanwhile, PALS students visited Piggott Community Hospital and got a guided tour.

Clay County farmers produced 17,800 bales of cotton in 1988, averaging 551 pounds per acre on 15,500 acres. Mississippi County was by-far the biggest producer in the state. Meanwhile, the Piggott Public Library held a surprise retirement party for Eunice Hamilton.

PHS senior track team members competed in four events in the state meet, and despite turning in their best performances of the year didn't place. Prescott won the boy's state title.

Senior cheerleaders for 1989-90 at PHS will be--Melissa McAllister, Tobey Stallings, Holly Webster, Lisa Swift, Jennifer Crawford, Janay Smart, Kee Estraca, Alisa Tate and Tanya Simpson.

And it was announced that Piggott Building Center has been purchased by Black Lumber of Corning and will be managed by Tommy Johnson with a crew of Keith Crittenden and Rob Johnson.
