District tournament coming to Piggott

Thursday, April 16, 2009
The Piggott Mohawks are hosting the 3A-3 district baseball tournament this week at Independence Park, and will be in action Thursday evening in the first round. This marks the first time in eight years that the Tribe has hosted the district tourney, and local baseball fans are encouraged to come out and enjoy the action.

The first round games will be played Thursday, with the Hoxie Mustangs taking on the Harrisburg Hornets at 4 p.m. The late game Thursday evening will feature the Mohawks as they take on the Brookland Bearcats, and will get underway around 6:30.

With a win over the Bearcats the Tribe will play at 2:30 Friday afternoon, and are expected to take on the Corning Bobcats. The winner of that game will advance to play the Manila Lions at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The winner of that game will play for the district championship at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, and the loser will play for third place at 4 p.m. that afternoon against the loser from the upper bracket.

In that upper bracket, the Harrisburg Hornets and Hoxie Mustangs meet in the first round, with the winner advancing to take on the Rivercrest Colts at noon on Friday. The winner of that game will then face the Tuckerman Bulldogs in the semi-finals at 5 p.m. Friday. The winner of that contest will advance to Saturday's 6:30 p.m. championship game, with the winner moving into the 4 p.m. third place contest that same day.

Mohawk baseball coach Shawn Hearn noted that there were still a few regular season games to be played Tuesday, but added that the standings should remain the same. Hearn added that there was the mathematical possibility that Corning could surpass Manila and move into the number one seed in the south. If that occurs the Mohawks will play the Lions in the second round and would only take on the Bobcats if they could advance to the semi's.

All the games are being played at Piggott's Independence Park.
