Voters were reminded that a bond issue would appear on the Nov. 5 ballot, 40 years ago this week. If approved the issue would fund the construction of new jails in both Piggott and Corning at a cost of $92,500 each. The past week also marked the first-ever lady's tournament at Sugar Creek Country Club. Betty Robbins took championship flight with a 206, Shirley Magee won "A" flight with a 239 and Lola Stewart was tops in "B" flight with a 258. And in service news, Gary Gidcomb, PHS class of 1966 shipped-out Sept. 30, for Vietnam.
The Jaycees report that the Clark and Walters Circus will visit Piggott on Thursday, Oct. 17, and will be setting-up at the industrial building site on the east edge of town. (where Aerial Bouquets is now located..actually the circus ended-up doing their show at the fairgrounds)
In other entertainment news, new owners Mr. and Mrs. Edward Turner announced that the Roller Rink would be open seven days a week..6-10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-6 p.m. on Sunday. Meanwhile, at the Carolyn Theater this week: "Wild In the Streets", "Dr. Zhivago" and "They Came From Beyond Space" were among the features.
The Mohawks remained undefeated as they pounded the Gideon Bulldogs 59-0 this past Friday, with three TD's passing, six TD's running and five successful PAT's. Longest catch was Jimmy Johnson to Richard Robinson for 37 yards. Kent Greene had a 75 yard kickoff return, David Varvell had his first interception of the year and Rick Culver and Adrian White had big games. Another high point for the 1,000-plus in attendance (no typo) was a combo tackle of a Bulldog ball carrier by Ronnie and Kenny Payne. Up next will be Lepanto at Parker Field.
1978
Local emergency personnel took part in a mock disaster 30 years ago this past week, simulating a bus-train collision with 26 victims. In other news, local members of the U of A Marching Razorback band were pictured; which included, Cindy Camp, Julie Roeder and Timothy Hogue of Piggott. This year's band is the biggest-ever with 192 musicians, 12 majorettes, one featured twirler, two drum majors and 22 flag bearers.
Congrats to the Greenway FFA dairy cattle team for their second place finish in the five-state Mid-South competition. Team members representing the state of Arkansas were Bill McHaffey, Mark Benson, Vance Madison and Barry Featherston. Meanwhile the Piggott FFA officers for this year are, president Marty Conley, VP Steve Edwards, treasurer Kole Conley, secretary Mike Gurley, student rep David Crockett, rep Andy Seal, sentinel Tony Mann, advisor Marty Hoggard and chaplain Mark Howell.
In births to report; a son, Chad David, was born to Mr. and Mrs. David Speer of Piggott on Oct. 3, at Community Methodist at Paragould.
At the Carolyn Theater this week the feature was "Saturday Night Fever" while the late show was "Malibu Beach."
In sports, the Mohawks lost their homecoming game to Lepanto 6-13 despite 115 yards from Donnie Morrison (who donned the #26 for the game). Lone TD came on a Jim Mann pitch to Brent Simpson for four yards. Meanwhile, the Piggott Pee Wee's beat Rector 30-0 behind Jeff Pollard's 130-yards-rushing performance.
By the way, Monday nights are now "Kiddie" night at Pasquale's Pizza, 716 East Main in Piggott.
1983
It was announced that the city of Piggott would receive a $750,000 industrial development grant 25 years ago this week. The money would be used to bring Missouri Research Laboratories (MRL) to the old Gossard Building (which now houses Aerial Bouquets). In other news, the Community Harvest Hoedown is set for Oct. 14, and plans are underway for the annual Christmas parade.
A tornado damaged several homes and barns in the Hall and Gravel Hill communities in the past week, damage was also reported at the Hall Cemetery. Student nurses from BRTC that are studying at Piggott Community Hospital included Sharon Landrum, Rene Gardner and Angie Reeves. And it was reported that the new radio station, KTEI FM 106 (actually 105.5) would be on the air by Oct. 15.
At the Carolyn Theater this week: "Cujo" while the late show was "Lust at First Bite." The winners of the beauty review at the recent Greenway Fall Festival were also pictured..queen was Byron Midkiff and the alternates included Earl Midkiff, Robert Clay and Doc Dunn.
In sports, the Mohawks fell to Paragould 0-14 in the past week and will visit the Highland Rebels next..while the junior Mohawks dropped their game to Rector 12-20. And it was reported that Busch Stadium in St. Louis would get a new surface of AstroTurf-8 by Monsanto for the 1984 baseball season.
1988
The Piggott School board elected officers at their meeting 20 years ago last week, and welcomed new members Darrell McCrillis and Barbara Harmon. President was Larry Simpson, VP was Charles Morrisett and Scot Sale was secretary. Meanwhile, Piggott Industrial Appreciation Day will be held Oct. 20, and the Christmas parade is being planned for Dec. 3.
In other news , there was a feature on the Piggott city-owned utility system, which includes one of only 15 public-owned power plants in the state. The Piggott State Bank clock-sign has gotten a facelift, and a fresh coat of paint in the past week. And the Mohawk Booster Club is holding a ham and bean dinner.
In births to announce; a daughter, Alexandra Jordan, was born to Rick and Cheryl Rodery back on May 23, at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock.
Finally, the Mohawks fell to undefeated Harrisburg 21-47 to drop to 1-5 overall as the Hornet's Michael Goodman ran for 275 yards..up next will be a home game with Highland. Meanwhile, the junior Mohawks got 227 yards on 11 carries from Craig Beck as they beat Clay County Central 38-24. Larry Jones had 63 yards on 12 carries, Chad Taylor had 58 on six carries and Phillip Davis finished with 54 yards on six carries…up next the junior squad visits EPC at Lepanto.
