Pocahontas Mayor Adrian White was the speaker at the monthly Piggott Chamber of Commerce meeting 40 years ago this past week. In other news, former teacher Marshall Eugene Hoggard has filed suit against the Piggott district after his contract was not renewed for the current term.
The reserve grand champion market hog at this year's Clay County Fair was shown by Andy Niederkorn, and was sold to the Bank of Rector for .75 a pound. Meanwhile, at the Carolyn Theater this week the feature was "Thoroughly Modern Millie" while the late show was "Torture Garden"…coming soon "Where Were You When the Lights Went Out".
In sports, the Mohawks extended their season record to 4-0 with a 28-0 win over the Malden Greenwave at Parker Field. Despite getting off to a slow start the Tribe prevailed, with Rick Rodery scoring the first touchdown from three yards out…Tim Huffman kicked the PAT. Jimmy Johnson had the other three TD's, Kent Greene had an interception while Steve Winton, Link Fuller and Eddie Winberry also had big games. Up next will be the Gideon Bulldogs at home.
The Marching Mohawks put on a great show for the crowd at halftime of the ballgame, under the direction of Mr. Ed White,…answering questions from the crowd with musical responses.
At the grocery this week: Patterson's Grocery had Mayrose wieners at two paks for .89..and Wonder Bread was two loaves for .39. At Morris' IGA they featured Banquet Pot Pies at .15 each and Gasper Chili at five cans for a dollar.
1978
Local political races 30 years ago this week included--Rue "Cupie" Mack and Oral J. Moore for county judge; Triply Muse and Monedith Wright for city clerk; the city alderman races included Donald Foster facing Ted Whitehorn; Junior Harris against Lester Edwards Jr.; Dr. Hillard Duckworth facing Jim McKenzie and Pagene Cook against Joe Johnson.
Also in the news, it was announced that the nation's first-ever gasohol plant will be built in Missouri by American Agri-Fuels..and should produce about 20-million gallons per year.
At the Carolyn Theater this week, Burt Reynolds is "Hooper" while the late show was "The Naked Countess".
In sports, the Mohawks scored 24 unanswered points in the final eight minutes of their game at Salem, and beat the Greyhounds 24-7. The Tribe got TD's from Donnie Morrison, Kevin Morris and Chris Camp..and the final two-point-conversion was scored by "Too Tall" Roger Stokes. Up next will be the homecoming contest against Lepanto Meanwhile, the junior Mohawks beat Walnut Ridge 26-0 on Sept. 28, and will travel to Highland for their next contest.
An ad announced that Tim Fair had purchased the Phillip's 66 station from Jim Walker, and it will now be known as Fair's 66 Service Station… Walker will continue to operate the radiator shop and wrecker service.
And Holcomb's Pharmacy had a sale on cold medicines… 24 caplets of Tylenol was .93… a four ounce bottle of Robitussin was .81 and a 12-pak of Dimical cold and cough caplets was just .69.
1983
Two fatal traffic accidents were reported 25 years ago this week. James Arthur Cox, 20, of Piggott was killed in an accident east of McDougal on Sept. 28…and Clifton Farel Patterson, 56, of Pollard was killed in an accident Oct. 1 near that community.
It was also reported that two women from Broseley, Mo., had been arrested in connection with the murder of Robert Lee McNece, 37, of Qulin…whose body was discovered southwest of Fagus on Sept. 27. A Gideon man is also being held in connection with the death.
At the Carolyn Theater this week the feature is "Risky Business" while the late show is "Wives Will Play".
In other news, it was announced that basic adult education classes will be offered beginning Oct. 11, and will conducted in the PHS library. And, over $500 was raised for St. Jude's Children's Hospital Sept. 24 as local kids took part in a Bike-A-Thon according to organizer Judy Parker.
In sports, the Mohawks are now 3-2 after a 19-0 win over Harrisburg. The Tribe got TD's from Benny Fry, Troy Jenkins and Coy Mauldin. Stacy Wade also had an 80-yard touchdown called back, but later broke his hand and is expected to be out the remainder of the season. Also singled-out by the coaches were Neil Morgan, Mark Lewis, Gregg Moore, Travis Cashion and Brock Swann. Up next is a visit to Greene County Tech.
Meanwhile, the junior Mohawks fell at Rector 22-0. Starring on offense was Brent Hartsfield, and on defense Sam Williams. The seventh graders also lost to Rector in their season opener.
1988
The Piggott City Council passed an ordinance 20 years ago last week to ban pit bulls within the city limits. The council also had a heating discussion on the lawsuit filed against the city concerning the proposed sewer project.
Ambra Wade was crowned football homecoming queen, her court included- Kristie Phares, Peggy Ruhl, Julie Davis, Kee Estraca, Sheila Blume, Tanya Simpson, Melissa McAllister and Rebekah Parker.
In other news, Bill Permenter was honored as he retired after 15 years as the operator of the city's power plant. Judge Harry Niewald proclaimed Oct. 2-8 National 4-H week, and was joined by Tara Olds, Gina Lewis and Heather Luff as he signed the proclamation. The Sonic Drive-In is getting a facelift and a new sign.This past Monday marked the first day for "Express Mail" at the local post office. And the Stewart-Hinkle Value Market will open Oct. 13. The new business replaced the Rebel Market, which was heavily damaged by fire earlier this year.
A program was presented on earthquake preparedness at the Piggott Community Center. An expert predicted that the chance for a "big one" before the year 2000 was 40-63-percent; and added that would increase to 86-97-percent by the year 2035.
In sports, the Tribe fell to Gosnell 7-29, and will host Harrisburg for homecoming next. Meanwhile, the junior Mohawks remain unbeaten at 4-0 after a 30-8 win at Corning. Craig Beck carried the ball 10 times for 191 yards…up next they'll host the 2-2-1 Clay County Central Cougars.
