Minnie Strickler day was observed at the First United Presbyterian Church in Piggott 40 years ago this past weekend, as the long-time choir director was honored for her many years of work. In other news, Carolyn Theater owner John Staples was recovering from heart attack he suffered Sept. 25, but is showing improvement.
By the way, at the Carolyn Theater this week the feature is "In the Heat of the Night" followed by Walt Disney's "Never A Dull Moment". The late show was "Champagne Murders"..coming soon "The Savage Seven".
In births to report, a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Gary Magee Sept. 20, at Piggott Hospital. Tracy Elizabeth Magee weighed-in at eight pounds and two ounces.
In sports, the first-ever annual golf tournament at the Sugar Creek Country Club resulted in a tie for first in championship flight. Both C.W. Knauts and Joe Litz shot 67 and 68's for 135's. Myron Rogers took "A" flight with a 154, Jamie Wallis won "B" flight with a 165 and Jim Hinkle took "C" flight with a 193. The ladies will have their tournament in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, the Mohawks pounded the Gosnell Pirates 38-7 to remain undefeated; Steve Rogers scored the first of the Tribe's six touchdowns. Up next will be a home contest against the Malden Greenwave.
An ad for Western Auto featured a sale on Buzz bikes, with high-rise handlebars and a banana seat, for just $42.95 (boys or girls)…and Hardcastle Chevrolet announced that they would roll-out the 1969 models with a big show Sept. 26-28 at the dealership on East Main. They urged everyone to come by and sign up for the "SuperSport Sweepstakes".

The Quorum Court voted 30 years ago this week to delay a public vote on building a new jail, opting to wait on a survey on state requirements. In other news, Claire Roeder was chosen football homecoming queen at PHS, her court included--Susan Wallis, Lesa McFarlin, Lynette Tate, Sandy Williams, Lee Ann Reams and Pam Wagster.
In the game the Mohawks shut-out the Rector Blackcats 33-0, with "Demolition" Donnie Morrison scoring three touchdowns as he rushed for over 134 yards..Kevin Morris had 142 yards and Brent Simpson finished with 103. Also singled-out were offensive linemen Gary Thompson, Dennis Cox, Randy Caldwell and on defense Roger Stokes.
Also in sports, Sugar Creek Country Club held its first-ever two man scramble recently..winners were Matt Shetley and Kent Sexton of Kennett with a 127.
At the Carolyn Theater this week, "Revenge of the Pink Panther" while the late show was "French Quarter". Also in entertainment news, the "Great American Circus" will visit Piggott for Oct. 3 at the fairgrounds.
Births to announce include a son to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Gossett of Piggott, born Sept. 4, at Doctor's Hospital in Poplar Bluff. Travis Lee Gossett weighed-in at eight pounds and two ounces.
Meanwhile, several Webelo Cub Scouts graduated into the Boy Scout program Aug. 29, in a program conducted by Cubmaster Darvin Stow and Scoutmaster Joe Cole. The group included--Mark Berry, Michael Binkley, Joey Cook, Damon Cluck, Mark Duckworth and Paul Stow.

It was reported 25 years ago this week that funding is expected to be approved soon for the construction of the new Eastern Clay Water District. In other news, Kellie Jones was named football homecoming queen at PHS, her court included--Stacy Holcomb, Angie Howell, Christie Webster, Belinda Moody, Pam Flanigan and Delana Wade.
Brown Shoe handed out safety awards in the past week, recipients were--Kathy Watson, Maggie Fry, Martha Gower, Betty Tidwell and Donna Strain. Meanwhile, the annual Pollard-Webster reunion was held Sept. 18.
At the Carolyn Theater this week the feature was "Mr. Mom" while the late show was "Randy the Electric Lady".
In sports, the Mohawks beat the Rector Blackcats 22-0 in the annual homecoming game. Troy Jenkins moved to quarterback for the injured Joey Staples and had a big game, hitting Stacy Wade on a 60-yard TD pass for the first score. Benny Fry had the other two touchdowns while Mark Self kicked one field goal and added a PAT. Up next will be a visit to Harrisburg.
Meanwhile, the junior Mohawks fell to Westside 6-7, with Todd Self scoring the only touchdown on a QB sneak. They'll host Corning next.
And the Lady Mohawk volleyball team split with Nettleton in the past week. The senior girls lost to move to 3-2 on the season while the junior girls won and also moved to 3-2 overall.
1988
Aerial Bouquet moved their balloon distributorship into the Piggott Industrial Park 20 years ago this month. The company currently has 28 employees in the new building and six in their old offices.
This week's paper also included a feature on local Scout leader Joe Cole, who had been involved in local scouting since becoming a Cub Scout in 1959. The story also re-counted some of the many trips Joe had made with local Scouts over the years.
In new births, a daughter was born July 4 to Mr. and Mrs. Brian Belcher of Piggott.. Britteny Daniel Belcher was born at Doctor's Regional in Poplar Bluff. A son, Benjamin Jay was born to Alvin and Regina Vangilder of Rector on Sept. 25 at St. Bernard's in Jonesboro. And a son, Cordie Matthew Sutfin III (just call me Trey) was born to Mr. and Mrs. Matt Sutfin of Piggott Sept. 19 also at St. Bernard's.
In other news, the annual Pollard-Webster reunion was held Sept. 18, at the War Memorial Building in Piggott…and work has begun on the new post office at Greenway. This week's paper also included a feature on Cox Lumber Company as they marked 39 years in business.
Volunteers were honored by the local Department of Human Services office recently, they included--Jessica Green, Pearl Newton, Florence Grooms, Betty Book, Bea Gilbert, Leona Shride, Mercy Featherston and Isabel Cochran.
In sports, the Mohawks fell to Clay County Central 0-13 in senior football action, and will host undefeated Gosnell next..meanwhile the Lady Mohawk volleyball team took three of four matches in the past week.
