The deadline for candidates to file for the upcoming municipal elections in Arkansas was noon Tuesday, Aug. 26. In the city of Piggott alderman races all four of the seats are up for election and all four incumbents have filed their petitions seeking new terms. Of those four incumbents, two will face opposition in November.

Running unopposed are alderman Jim Poole, for south ward, position one and Tommy Risinger for south ward, position two. Poole is running for a four-year term, while Risinger is running for a two-year term.

Meanwhile, incumbent Carl Birmingham, in north ward, position two, has been challenged by former alderman Mike Cook. The other incumbent, Lester J. Edwards Jr. has drawn a challenge from Ted G. Hackworth for north ward, position one. The winner of the Birmingham-Cook race will serve a two-year term, while the winner of the Edwards-Hackworth race will serve four years.

The mayor, city clerk and city attorney do not stand for re-election until the fall of 2010.

Three of the incumbent aldermen in Rector have filed for re-election include Lavern "Mac" Manchester, David Freeman and Shaun "Cam" Cate. The other incumbent alderman, Glen Leach, chose not to run and Teresa L. Roofe has filed for that seat and is un-opposed. The Rector recorder/treasurer, Lowell McKenney, also filed for re-election and is not facing opposition.

In McDougal, all four incumbent aldermen, Marvin Kilbreath, Leslie W. Parrish, Kenneth Ort and Cindy Roberts filed for re-election along with the incumbent recorder/treasurer, Bobby L. Brown. None are facing opposition in the general election, which will be held Tuesday, Nov. 4.
