Life is serious, man

Wednesday, May 21, 2008
Life is getting serious.

It's possible we will elect a black man or a white woman for President of the United States.

It's also possible we won't be able to afford gas to drive to the polls.

We may have to park gas-guzzlers and use our walking shoes.

Plans may be altered as vacationers stick closer to home too.

Many travelers may opt not to drive cross-country for the July 4th parades, picnics and reunions.

We'll have to let our grass grow high and our savings dry up.

We may forego high priced shops for discount stores, and bargains.

Women may have to dip into their mad money for milk and bread.

Barefoot and pregnant may become a reality

We may have to pull on the pullovers to keep warm as we lower thermostats in winter.

And sit under a shade tree in summertime as we cut back on air conditioning.

As money gets tighter, it will affect every facet of our daily lives.

Homemakers will opt for generic foods, in lieu of brand names.

Intertainment may suffer as economically pressed citizens stay home, more often than before.

Movie houses and restaurants may feel the adverse effect too.

I'm telling you, life is getting serious, man.

I was in a restaurant this week. The lunch special was chicken or fried bologna .But they had run out of chicken. .

For most of us, the pinch is felt in the high price of gasoline, propane prices, grocery hikes, and inconvenience..

For others, it is much more than inconvenience.

I'm thinking that many high school graduates won't be able to afford college or to commute from college to home. Many homeowners are not able to make loan payments and are facing foreclosure.

Others can't afford health insurance or the medications they need.

Yet, and I must say this, we have so much to be thankful for. If we have good health, a supporting family, and love, those blessings will help us though bad economic times.

But it would help if gas prices dropped a bit.
