The Piggott Junior boy's track team won their district tournament at Jonesboro High School last week, as they edged past Corning 178 to 168. Despite their lack of experience the outstanding athleticism of the Piggott participants propelled them to a number of wins.

Among the freshmen competing Corbin Chase took first place in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Meanwhile Alek Samples took first in the triple jump and placed third in the long jump competition, while Colby Lovelace won the shot put competition and came in second in the discus.

Other winners from the ninth grade class included Blake Yandell's victory in the 300 hurdles. Meanwhile Roger McCollum took second in the 300 and the 100 meter hurdles, and Kyle Hardin took fourth in the high jump. Another top performer was eighth grader J.T. Wilson who finished second in the 1,600 meter run.

Also placing for the Tribe were relay runners Luke Yount, Jarod Woods, J.T. Wilson, Dillon McNew, Zac Redmon and seventh grader Jim Copelin.

Other participants for the Mohawks were, Justin Tompkins, Matt Cole, Jake Poe, Hayden Risinger, Will Daffron, Derek Hall, Jon Perkins, Tanner Murray, Kyle Wright, Tim Tover, Connor Rodery, Enoch Richardson, Lucas Brewer, Levi Miller, Collin Benbrook, Tyler Johnson, Ethan Burns, Rahseen Cole and Logan Murray. The team was coached by Michael Harrell and Dave Hendrix.

By the way, the junior Mohawks also won the district track title in 1988…a feat this year's team repeated nearly 20 years later to the day. And it should be added that one of the members of that championship team in 1988 was Mohawk coach Michael Harrell.
