1968

The Piggott Chamber of Commerce and the city joined forces 40 years ago last week to erect signs at two local industrial parks. Rex Cate and Ernest "Buck" Thomas reported that one sign was erected on the ten-acre plot on the east edge of the city (where Country Mart now sits) and another was located on the south edge of town in the eight-acre site (swimming pool-Darling area). The signs offered the site and $100,000 in building funds to interested industries.

In other news, Todd Cavaness and Kellie Benson were chosen Little Mr. and Miss Greenway at the recent talent show at GHS, and the PHS Marching Mohawk band will hold its annual spring concert on Sunday, May 5.

Speaking of news from the school, the new officers have been named for the PHS Beta Club for next year, they include--President Pat Dale, VP Madison Sowell, Secretary Gay Toombs, Treasurer Susan Patterson, Reporter Jim Hillyer, Representitive Barbara Featherston, pianist Veronica Bradshaw and song leader Patsy Bradshaw. And the FFA father and son banquet was held April 25 with Adrian Wyatt chosen as star greenhand while the chapter star farmer was Mike Winberry.

At the grocery store, Rebel Market had chicken neck bones for .15 a pound, while Lipton tea was .39 for a quarter pound. Cox Lumber Company had a spring paint sale and offered wall paint for $5.25 a gallon (regularly $6.98) and Clifford Cole Oil Company had Firestone tires ranging from $15.25 to $25.00 each with trade-in (add three dollars each tire for whitewalls).

1978

Political announcements made 30 years ago this past week included--Troy Graddy for Clay County judge, E.C. "Carroll" Poole for treasurer, Glen "PeeWee" Rouse and Joe Litzelfelner for assessor and C.W. Knauts for municipal judge. In other political news, gubernatorial candidate Frank Lady visited Piggott on the campaign trail.

Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church has announced a new preacher, as they reported that Elder Joe Brandon of Poplar Bluff has answered the call to the pulpit.

Steve Mays and Tom Colvin of KBOA radio hosted the annual Greenway PTA talent show recently to raise funds for their efforts. Top act in the high school division was a band from Piggott made up of David Argo, Scott Keller, Marty Felts and Mike Dickerson. Ronald Johnson also notched a first place finish in the elementary division with his banjo, while Tim Roberts and his younger brother Chris also made a good showing.

The Piggott FHA is sponsoring Healthy Baby Week through the March of Dimes, and Teri Crittendon and Debbie Haywood joined Piggott Mayor George Cook in signing a proclamation to that effect.

Finally, Roeder's Ben Franklin had a sale on 30-quart Styrofoam coolers for $1.17 or you could get 51 styrofoam cups for just .41 a pak. And at the Carolyn Theater this week, "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" was the feature.

1983

Among the items discussed at the Piggott City Council meeting 25 years ago this past week was construction of the new tennis courts next to the municipal swimming pool. The council was informed that bids were being accepted on the job and construction would begin later in the summer.

In other news, Greenway High School has announced their valedictorian and salutatorian for their upcoming commencement; they are Deneika Harris and Andy Small. Meanwhile, graduation ceremonies for ASU will be held May 13 in Jonesboro.

Piggott junior high cheerleaders have been chosen for next year, they are--Carrie Riddle, Angela Potts, Angie Binkley, Sabrina Davis, Latraca Tanner, Frankie Rester, Cynthia Duncan and Kim Cashion.

An auction was scheduled for May 7, 1983 to sell the nursery equipment from Piggott Nursery. The ad explained that after 89 years in business the family had decided to switch over to row crop farming, and that the nursery equipment was up for sale to the highest bidder. Magee Auction was conducting the sale, now in their 13th year of service to the area.

Finally, Cox Lumber had a spring paint sale with wall paint at $9.99 to $12.99 a gallon..regularly $12.33 to $15.72.

1988

Cord and Matt Sutfin met with the Piggott City Council 20 years ago last week on the need for expansion with their company, Aerial Bouquet. The council voted to allow the company the use of two acres in the industrial park and a 10-thousand square foot building would be constructed. The company had 32 employees and a weekly payroll of about $8,000 ( or $258 per employee) at the time.

Sad news out of the Nimmons community the last week of April as Tony L. Gilbee, 18, drowned in a swimming hole along the St. Francis River. He was a former student of Clay County Central and was a junior at PHS.

In news at Piggott High, the annual junior senior prom was held in the past week..and the Marching Mohawk Majorette squad was announced, they are--Tabby Reaves, Lora Wagster, Rebekah Parker, Carrie Moffitt, Erica Nichols, Stephanie Staples and Melanie Settlemoir. Meanwhile, the Mohawk baseball team's district tournament game was rained-out at Highland.

In other sports news, the Piggott Mohawk junior track team won the district meet at Corning last week with a total of 150 points to second-place Pocahontas' 92. Individual champion was Piggott's Craig Beck, as he set three district and one school record on the day. David Sutton also recorded a first place finish in the 1600 meter, and several Piggott relay teams took top honors as well.

Finally, Taylor's Grocery in Piggott announced that Darrell Vaughn has joined them as a meat cutter after many years of local service.
