Last week's game at Jonesboro featured a dominate pitching performance by junior Tyler Grubb, and some excellent Mohawk hitting as the Tribe pounded-out 15 hits in the win.
As the contest got underway the Mohawks jumped on the Warriors early, putting up nine runs in the top of the first inning. The Tribe added two more in the second, one in the third inning, three in the fourth and the final three runs in the fifth inning.
Leading the way offensively was freshman Colby Lovelace who was 4 for 4 with five RBI. Another freshman, Alek Samples, was 1 for 4 with two RBI, senior Brandon Burdin was 2 for 2 with one RBI, senior Brice Swann was 2 for 3 with three RBI including a two-run homerun and junior Jonathan Wright was 2 for 3 with one RBI. In the Mohawk's first two games Swann is 4 for 7 with two homeruns.
Grubb faced 24 batters while working five and one-third-innings, striking out 12 and walking six batters to post the win. Swann came in and worked the final two-thirds of an inning, striking out two in the process.
With the non-conference win the Mohawks improved to 2-0 on the season. As of Monday morning the Tuesday afternoon game at Hoxie had already been scratched, and the Thursday afternoon home game against Harrisburg was doubtful according to Coach Shawn Hearn. The Tribe's next scheduled game after that will be next Monday, March 24, when they're scheduled to host the Corning Bobcats at Independence Park.
