He was born on Feb. 18, 1925, in Piggott, the son of William and Elsie (Mann) Harwood.
Mr. Harwood served in the United States Marines during World War II, in the South Pacific Theater Third Marine Division. He was a sergeant for the Flint Police Department retiring in 1974 after 25 years of service.
He was involved with many organizations including, Genesee Masonic Lodge 174, Valley of Bay City Scottish Rite, past Potentate of Elf Khurafeh Shriners, past president of Oasis Shrine Club, Royal Order of Jesters Court 74, and a charter member of F.O.P. Arrowhead Lodge 126 and V.F.W. Post 3720.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra Tucker.
Survivors include a son, Michael Harwood and wife, Connie, of Owosso, Mich.; a brother, Don Harwood and wife, Jane, of Swartz Creek, Mich.; five grandchildren, Sam, Sean and Monica, all of Owosso, Mich., Nikole Mullen and husband, Robby, of Cleburne, Texas, and Corey Tucker and wife, Amiee, of Indian Trail, N.C.; two great-granddaughters, Rylee and Kamryn; two nephews, Matt Harwood and wife, Phyllis, of Novi, Mich., and Steven Harwood and wife, Kim, of Grand Blanc, Mich.; and one niece, Susie Mitchell and husband, Rick, of Gaines, Mich.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at the Swartz Funeral Home, located at 1225 West Hill Road in Swartz Creek, with Pastor Doug Klein officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery with a military graveside service, under the auspices of the Flint Detachment 155 Marine Corps League. A Masonic service was held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at the funeral home.
