Clifton Carl Shride

Clifton Carl Shride, 90, recently of Piggott, died Monday, March 14, 2005, in Anaheim, Calif.

He was born April 8, 1914, in Clay County, the son of the late David Henry and Zulla Belle White Shride.

He was a member of the Church of God in St. Louis, Portland, Oreg., Bell Gardens, Calif., Madison, Wisc., and Piggott. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was based in Colorado and the Philippines. He worked as a government meat inspector and retired after 30 years of government service.

Shride and his new bride, Leona, taught in a one room school in Patterson, Ark., with Leona teaching kindergarten through fourth grade and Shride teaching fifth through eighth grades. During World War II he learned to be a barber and supplemented their income after the war by working in this profession. He valued education throughout his life and was continually taking classes to improve his professional position. By the end of his government career, he was equivalent to a veterinarian.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Iva Leona Shride; three daughters, Iva Mignon Soto of La Habra, Calif., and her husband, Richard, Glenys Yvonne Arnell of Stockton, Calif., and her husband, Jerry, and Mitzi Belle Manning of Anaheim and her husband, Tom; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and cousins; and other relatives and friends.

A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. on March 17, 2005, at the Renaker/Kloekgether Mortuary in Buena Park, Calif. Funeral services will be held in Piggott at 10 a.m. on Friday, March, 25, 2005, at the Piggott Church of God. Burial will follow in the Piggott Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 24, 2005, at Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home.
