Lyman Sneed, 94, of Piggott died Monay, May 3, 2004, at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center in Poplar Bluff.

He was born Dec. 2, 1909, in McLeansboro, Ill., to the late Arthur and Iva Knight Sneed.

Mr. Sneed married Miriam Latta on Jan. 22, 1937, in Pollard. She died on Oct. 24, 1997.

Mr. Sneed graduated from Piggott High School in May of 1930 and did survey work for the Arkansas State Highway Department after graduation. He clerked at the Piggott Post Office from Sept. 1, 1935, until entering the U.S. Army on Oct. 1, 1943.

While in the Army, he attended postal clerk school in Westchester, Pa., and worked in the Army Post Office in San Francisco. Sixteen months of his service time was spent in the China-Burma-India Theatre. He received an Honorable Discharge on Dec. 28, 1945, and returned to the Piggott Post Office as a clerk until Jan. 5, 1955, when he became a rural carrier until retirement Nov. 26, 1971.

Mr. Sneed was a Christian, baptized April 30, 1950, and a member of the First Baptist Church in Piggott. Over the years at First Baptist, he served as Superintendent of Training Union, usher, served on the furnishing and decorating committee when the church was rebuilt in 1965 after a fire; taught Intermediate Boys Sunday school class, served on personnel and property committees and taught the Adult Men's Sunday school class.

Mr. Sneed had a deep love for family, basketball, baseball and his cattle. He joined the Piggott Fire Department in 1934 and served for many years as an active fireman.

Mr. Sneed was preceded in death by three brothers, Marshall, Arron and Arthur Sneed; and two sisters, Helen Hitt and Ruth Wilbur.

He is survived by one sister, Mildred Cohen of Pine Bush, New York; two daughters, Jessie Davidson and husband, Troy, of Poplar Bluff and Linda Hart and husband, Phillip, of Poplar Bluff; one granddaughter, Cara Barbaria and husband, Joseph, of Houston, Texas; one grandson, Dr. Calvin Cargill and wife, Rhodema, of Lufkin, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Kristen, Kimela, Katie and Ryan Cargill, all of Lufkin, Texas; and many loving nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 8, 2004, at the First Baptist Church in Piggott with Rev. Don Mayo of Poplar Bluff officiating. Burial followed in the Piggott Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Dr. Calvin Cargill, Thomas Sneed, James Sneed, Paul Seegraves, Marshall Hitt and Brian Sneed. Honorary pallbearers were Bob Parks, Curt Veal, Junior Wiley, Jim Winton, Bo Brandon and Ed Howard.

Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home of Piggott was in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be sent to the First Baptist Church of Piggott, the American Cancer Society or a charity of preference.
