Come on out to the ballgamePosted Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at 12:40 PM
The Piggott Mohawks are hosting the 3A-3 district tournament for the first time in eight years this weeek, with games going on Thursday through Saturday at Independence Park.
The Tribe, the number three seed in the north division, will play their first round game at 6:30 p.m. Thursday against the Brookland Bearcats, and with a win should take on the Corning Bobcats at 2:30 Friday afternoon. With a victory in the second round they'll play again at 7:30 Friday evening against the Manila Lions. Making to the semi-finals would also insure the Mohawks a trip to next week's regional at Tuckerman, as the top four teams will advance. A complete rundown of the bracket and schedule may be found in the sports section of this week's paper, and here on-line. For those who haven't watched the Mohawks this year, you've missed a treat. The combination of some veteran players, along with an outstanding group of underclassmen, has provided some great play at times. No doubt this squad, under second year head coach Shawn Hearn, will continue to mature and should do well for the next couple of seasons. Visitors to Independence Park may also notice the new dirt on the high school field infield. Recent donations of close to $2,000 made the purchase of the dirt possible by the Parks and Recreation Department, and Wednesday Brock Swann and Bret McMillon were busy spreading it on the field. The dirt is supposed to be the fastest draining, quickest drying, variety you can find..and gives the infield a nice red tint. Come for the ball, come for the dirt, but please come out and support the Mohawk baseball team this week as they host the district tournament. |
