Hoops update, schedule changePosted Friday, November 21, 2008, at 10:24 AM
The Piggott Mohawks have added a game to their schedule for next Monday, as the junior and senior boys will travel to Armorel for a non-conference set with the Tigers. Then, on Tuesday, Nov. 25, they'll host the Corning Bobcats at PHS. Tonight, Friday, Nov. 21, the Tribe will host the Tuckerman Bulldogs in a re-match of last Tuesday's season-opener. Tonight's game will also give Mohawk basketball fans a chance to see the legendary coach of the Bulldogs, Morgan Gilbert. Gilbert, who began his coaching career in 1965 at Tyronza, recorded his 1,000th victory early last December as the Bulldogs beat Walnut Ridge. Now in his 44th year of coaching, Gilbert spent three years at Tyronza, the next five years at Bay..and has been at Tuckerman since. The best finish by any of his teams was as 2A state runner-ups in 1992. Gilbert has also been a prolific baseball coach the past 44 years, winning over 865 games, 25 district titles and one state championship. So if you happen to notice the older gentleman sitting quietly at the end of the Tuckerman bench Friday night at PHS..know that you're looking at the dean of basketball coaches in Northeast Arkansas. And one of only six coaches in state history to win over 1,000 games. |
